Band of Horses Live in Leeds 2017

Winter masih setia di Leeds, tapi dinginnya winter tidak mengalahkan orang-orang lokal di sini mengantri dari jam 6 sore sampai gate open di jam 7 malam. Winter coat dan rokok masih menjadi teman setia mereka dalam menanti penampilan dari band Amerika, Band of Horses. Band of Horses sepertinya menjadikan 'Leeds' sebagai kota wajib mereka setiap mengadakan album touring di UK. Kali ini mereka touring album baru mereka berjudul 'Why Are You Ok' yang baru saja rilis tahun lalu.

Sebagai pendengar setia Band of Horses, tentunya kesempatan ini tidak boleh saya lewatkan, saya pun inisiatif datang cepat untuk mengantri dengan tujuan mendapatkan spot tepat di depan panggung. Ada kejadian yang menarik saat saya dan pendengar Band of Horses lainnya mengantri untuk menunggu gate dibuka. Kebetulan saat itu, Kings of Leon yang juga konser tapi di First Direct Arena (venue konser terbesar di Leeds), saat kami mengantri, ada sekelompok orang menghampiri kami berteriak seperti ini, "Hi Mate, who's playing tonight? Are they good? I bet they are such a band who you love before it was cool." Miris sih, mereka kayak judging secara tidak langsung kalau orang-orang nonton Band of Horses itu 'hipster' from the way they talk. Well, untungnya orang-orang disini tidak peduli dan menganggap itu seperti angin lalu.

For your information, usia penonton kali ini tidak jauh berbeda dengan pengalaman saya nonton The Cure. Rata-rata umur 20an, tapi juga banyak bapak-bapak brewokan beserta dengan anaknya, but i don't see any grandpa either grandma seperti waktu di Manchester Arena. Outfit mereka juga tidak se-fantastis waktu nonton The Cure, cenderung pakaian yang biasa orang kenakan ketika nonton konser.

Tepat jam 7, gate dibuka dan Alhamdulillah dapat tempat paling depan. Sejam kemudian, opening act dimulai dari band yang genrenya mirip-mirip Band of Horses but i don't know their name hahaha. Mereka main cuma 5 lagu selama kurang lebih 30 menit. Selama menunggu Ben Bridwell siap-siap menghibur para fansnya di Leeds, terdengar sayup-sayup suara dari samping, gerombolan wanita nyanyi 'Monster' untuk menghilangkan rasa bosan menunggu. 15 menit kemudian band yang terkenal dengan lagu 'The Funeral'nya pun beraksi di O2 Academy Leeds.

Since i cannot recall properly lagu apa saja yang mereka mainkan saat itu, moment yang paling epic sudah pasti ketika mereka nyanyi 'The Funeral' dan 'No One's Gonna Love You'. Tapi, part of mereka nyanyi 'Factory' adalah moment ketika semua orang di venue ikutan nyanyi. Well, saat mereka nyanyi 'Laredo', 'Casual Party' dan 'Neighbor' favorit jugaaaa, TAPI sayangnya 'Marry Song, Monster dan Whatever, Wherever' tidak masuk dalam setlist mereka. Asli sedih parah *lebai. Padahal lagu itu yang paling dinanti-nanti *crying. So far, ada 3-5 lagu yang mereka bawakan dari album terbaru mereka (Casual Party, Throw My Mess, In A Drawer, Solemn Oath). Akhirnyaaa, konser ini pun ditutup dengan lagu encore 'The General Specific'.

The Cure Live in Manchester 2016

It'a been a long time since my last post i guess.

Postingan kali ini cuma ingin sharing pengalaman nonton The Cure kemarin di Manchester Arena tanggal 29 November tahun kemarin. Sudah lewat 4 bulan sih tapi ga papa lah hahaha XD.

Let's begin.

Waktu itu hari selasa pagi di Leeds, cuaca lumayan dingin agak frosty, berangkat dari Leeds ke Manchester jam 10 pagi. Untungnya jarak tempuh Leeds ke Manchester via Train lumayan dekat cuma menghabiskan waktu 1-1/5 jam. Jadi, tiba di Manchester saat itu sekitar pukul 11.30. Mumpung konsernya masih lama, gatenya baru buka jam 7 malam, saya menyempatkan diri jalan-jalan keliling kota Manchester. Kota Manchester lumayan seru tapi agak kotor, kotanya indie banget sih, banyak toko-toko vinyl, street art yang melambangkan musik scene 'madchester' juga bertebaran di sepanjang jalan.

Jam 6 sore, area Manchester Arena sudah penuh dengan orang-orang yang mengantri untuk menikmati live performance dari Robert Smith dkk. Penampilan mereka unik-unik, mulai dari yang memakai outfit serba the cure (kaos, totebag) sampai yang berkostum ala Robert Smith + make up. Kalau di Indo sering kita bertemu dengan orang-orang menjual tiket tidak resmi di sekitar arena, di sini orang-orang malah pada bertanya kepada mereka yang lagi antri whether mereka punya spare ticket atau tidak. I bet, mereka pasti sangat ingin nonton The Cure tapi memang ticket The Cure cepat sold out dan di sini website yang menjual tiket membatasi jumlah tiket yang bisa dibeli setiap orang, cuma bisa beli 1-3 tiket per orang.

Jam 7 tepat, gate dibuka, tidak perlu mengantri lama, cuma sekitar 1-2 menit karena jumlah gatenya banyak dan pemeriksaannya juga cepat. Official Merchandise sudah menunggu di depan pintu, fans The Cure mulai berkerumun untuk membeli beberapa official kaos touring mereka di tahun 2016 dan saya pun juga tidak mau ketinggalan haahahaha.

Setelah berhasil mendapatkan kaos The Cure, saya pun masuk ke seat tempat nonton saya, seatnya lumayan dekat dari panggung tapi dari samping. Sebelah kiri saya ada kakek-kakek beserta cucunya, depan saya bapak-bapak metal dengan anaknya,  kanan saya ada sekelompok ibu-ibu dan di belakang saya duduk pemuda usia 28an beserta teman-temannya yang sibuk berbicara soal scene musik di Inggris.

Jam 8 malam, Manchester Arena sepiiiiiii banget. Jujur, seumur hidup dalam pengalaman nonton konser, Manchester Arena adalah venue konser yang paling besar yang pernah saya datangi dan ketika melihat tempat ini sepi, rasanya sedih, masalahnya yang main ini THE CURE LOH, THE CURE.

Selang beberapa menit kemudian, Twilight Sad, band pembuka The Cure main sekitar 30 menit dan jreng jreng jreeeng TEMPAT INI SEKETIKA PENUH, GA ADA SEAT YANG KOSONG. Epic! Histeria penonton The Cure betul-betul ajaib.

Sekitar 8.45 malam, band asal Sussex ini memulai performance mereka dengan lagu 'Shake Dog Shake'.  Selang beberapa lagu mereka nyanyi 'In Between Days' dan kakek-kakek di samping saya langsung bangkit dari kursinya dan JOGET! Gila sih kakek-kakek ini, tapi tidak cuma kakek-kakek ini saja yang bangkit dari kursinya dan joget, tapi hampir semua orang juga melakukan hal yang sama.

Oh iya, The Cure juga band yang saya nonton yang encorenya sampai 3x! Nah, ketika 'Friday I'm In Love' tiba-tiba menggema di seluruh Manchester Arena, THE BEST. Kakek-kakek di samping saya langsung ngomong ke saya kayak gini dengan nafas terengah-engah habis menyanyi, "This show is amazing, right?" Well, it's beyond amazing !!!

Daaan, konsernya pun ditutup dengan lagu 'Why I Can't Be You' dan ucapan terima kasih dari Robert Smith dkk.

Biasanya, saya langsung buka Best New Music yang terdiri dari Best New Album, Best New Track dan Best New Reissue. Kata "Best" di Pitchfork artinya mereka dapat rating yang tinggi dari hasil review tim Pitchfork, mostly, ratingnya 8+/10 , tapi kalau saran saya jangan terlalu bergantung sama rating sih, coba buka All Reviews dan liat genre yang kalian suka dari album atau track yang direview, siapa tau ada yang kecantol.

Lagu-lagu yang terangkum dalam mixtapesnya juga adalah lagu-lagu yang populer di bulan itu. Dengan adanya mixes di situs ini membuat saya lebih mudah untuk menemukan musik baru.

Dari situs ini, kita bisa tau genre yang dimainkan dari musisi tersebut dan siapa sajakah musisi yang memainkan genre yang serupa.

NME bisa dibilang majalah yang cukup bersejarah dan berpengaruh di Inggris, since print out dari majalah ini susah didapat di Indonesia, thanks god, kita bisa akses via online. NME sendiri menyajikan informasi yang lebih kompleks dari situs-situs sebelumnya, berita hangat dari dunia musik, film, bahkan info mengenai tiket dan festival bisa kalian dapatkan di NME. 2 hal yang selalu  menarik perhatian saya saat mengunjungi situs ini adalah Album Reviews dan Live Reviews, kalau kalian tidak mau repot bisa langsung cari yang hasil reviewnya 3-4/5, biasanya musisi yang diberikan nilai seperti itu dari NME worthy untuk didengar.

Waktu lagi nulis postingan ini, webnya BIRP! lagi under maintenance jadi tampilannya seperti yang di atas. Pada dasarnya, konsep di BIRP! sendiri lebih ke playlist, tiap bulan mereka bikin playlist dari lagu-lagu yang release di bulan tersebut dan kalian bisa cek playlist mereka tiap bulan untuk discover band atau penyanyi yang mungkin belum pernah kalian dengar sebelumnya.

CoS bisa dibilang situs paling lengkap dalam discovering music. Pertama, selain review album (rating A-E) tentunya, CoS punya "Upcoming Releases" dimana kalian bisa menemukan lagu-lagu apa saja yang bakalan rilis dalam jangka waktu dekat ini (fitur ini dijamin bikin kalian paling up to date soal musik deh pokoknya). Kedua, nilai plus untuk CoS, mereka punya "Music at The Movies" dimana mereka discuss soal soundtrack dalam film, paling favorit dari situs ini kalau menurut saya pribadi adalah fitur "Genre" dimana sangat memudahkan kita untuk digging/discovering band-band baru yang mungkin bakalan kita suka based on genre yang sering kita dengar.

Stereogum sebenarnya bukan situs favorit saya untuk discovering hahaha, cuma situs ini lumayan simple jadi lagu atau video baru dari band atau penyanyi bisa langsung diliat di sini plus interview dari band-band atau penyanyinya juga.

8. Gnoosic

Situs Gnoosic sendiri baru saya kenal beberapa minggu terakhir ini daaaan terbukti sangaat berguna. Jadi nanti kalian klik continue, kemudian isi 3 band yang kalian suka setelah itu situs ini akan suggest ke kalian beberapa band yang mengusung genre yang sama dengan band yang kalian isi sebelumnya. Bandcamp, kalau dibandingkan dengan situs-situs sebelumnya, band-band/penyanyi yang ada di sini bisa dibilang cukup obscure atau tidak se-mainstream band-band lainnya tapi jangan salah mereka keren-keren kok. Hal yang menarik dari situs ini yaitu lebih detail terkait genre, jadi misalnya kalian ingin cari band/penyanyi dengan genre rock, nanti bakalan terbagi lagi ke subgenre rock mulai dari psychedelic rock, garage rock, art rock dst. Jadi lebih memudahkan kalian untuk menemukan sosok-sosok band yang akan menjadi favorit kalian kelak hahaha.

Anthony Fantano atau yang dikenal sebagai The Needle Drop di youtube adalah salah satu youtuber musik yang harus kalian subscribe dan nonton videonya. Hampir tiap hari si Anthony posting video tentang review album atau track terbaru, skala rating albumnya 1/10, coba deh cari yang ratingnya 7-9/10 biasanya albumnya keren sih tp sekali lagi rating bukan segalanya, sebagai contoh, waktu itu Anthony memberikan rating yang cukup rendah 5/10 untuk debut album Courtney Barnett tapi di beberapa situs musik di internet rating untuk album ini terbilang tinggi loh. Jadi, rating memang membantu tapi jangan dijadikan sebagai patokan yah :)

Amoeba adalah record store yang bertempat di Hollywood, San Fransisco dan Berkeley. Nah karena Amoeba tergolong record store yang besar dan koleksinya lengkap maka tidak jarang musisi-musisi atau artis-artis berkunjung ke tempat ini untuk jajan rock. What's In My Bag sama dengan konsep Haul, mengajak para musisi/artis yang berkunjung di sana untuk sedikit sharing mengenai rilisan fisik yang mereka beli. Dari sini, kalian bisa jadikan referensi musik-musik apa saja yang di dengar sama contohnya, Noel Gallagher, Dave Grohl, Mac Demarco, Ty Segall, Paul Weller, Johnny Marr dst.

Setelah kalian subscribe coba buka video-videonya dari situ kalian bisa liat roster dari record label tersebut.

KEXP ini radio di Seattle dan mereka sering mengundang band/penyanyi yang baru saja merilis album/EP. Biasanya band-band tersebut memainkan 4-5 lagu dari album terbaru mereka. Uniknya, KEXP ini betul-betul menjangkau semua band, jadi waktu itu sempat nonton ada band dari Timur Tengah dan Afrika main di KEXP. Coba deh sering-sering buka KEXP di youtube, mungkin band-band yang main di KEXP bisa jadi referensi baru kalian.

KCRW juga merupakan radio tapi berlokasi di Los Angeles, konsepnya sama dengan KEXP, band yang main di KEXP dan KCRW juga banyak yang sama meskipun tidak semuanya. Jadi, mungkin kalau kalian tidak menemukan musik yang kalian senangi di KEXP bolehlah berkunjung di KCRW begitupula sebaliknya.

My Favorite Albums of 2015

2015 has been a great year for music scene, in the early year we had the new album from Icelandic singer Bjork, indie pop band The Decemberist and Belle and Sebastian, folk singer Bob Dylan and the most critical acclaim album from Kendrick Lamar. Several comeback albums from 90’s band such as Blur, Built To Spill and Sleater-Kinney. In the end of 2015 we had the new album from New Order, Deafheaven and Joanna Newsom. 2015 was brimmed with lots of brilliant album but I had 15 favorite albums that successfully gained my attention.
 

15. Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress

        Release Date    : March 31, 2015 

Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress is the fifth album from Canadian post-rock band. It’s roughly 40 minutes divided into 4 tracks, probably the shortest album they’ve ever made. Everytime I listen to this album, I feel like the earth will break down, the world will end, all the people will gather into one place and ready to be resurrected.

14. Tobias Jesso Jr. – Goon

        Genre                 : Indie Rock, Folk

        Release Date    : March 17, 2015

Listening to Tobias reminds me of Randy Newman, early John Lennon solo career, Elton John, Bob Dylan and Nick Drake. The songs mostly speak up about romantic love-unrequited love, quite straightforward. Hollywood recalls the way Elton John played piano and Without You sounds a lil bit like Imagine from John Lennon.

13. EL VY – Return To The Moon

EL VY is a side project from Matt Berninger (The National) and Brent Knopf (Ramona Falls). It is quite difficult to define the album. There are various sounds exist, unlike the national, you will never find a melancholy rock sound in this album. RTTM is groovy and funky as you may listen to Paul Is Alive or Return To The Moon, the tracks that reveal Matt Berninger tries to embark disco-dance rock. The new sound from Berninger-Knopf is compatible with amusing-sarcastic lyrics they’ve created. I’m peaceful cause my dick’s in sunlight held up by kites (I’m The Man To Be) or I just need a friend to guard the door (Need A Friend).

12. Panda Bear - Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper

Noah Lennox always surprises me with his peculiar sound project. PBMTGR possesses beautiful vocal harmonies and catchy electronic rhythms. It’s so dark-futuristic sounds. Well, mostly in this album, Noah emphasizes how frightening is death.

11. Father John Misty – I Love You, Honeybear

I Love You, Honeybear is the perfect package for unusual love songs. It’s sweet, beautiful melodies allure me to get more into J.Tillman’s songs. This ex-Fleet Foxes member describes more his personal life about love and heartache, oh, I just love the kind of woman who can walk over a man (The Night Josh Tillman Came To Our Apt.) and Let me show you how figure I can give you true affection (True Affection). Bored in The USA illustrates how depressing is USA, it’s miserable, even if he adds “laughter backsound” to reduce the sadness but still, irony but genuinely fascinating and great.

We have myriad riot grrrl band in 90’s and it’s not Bikini Kill, Bratmobile or Heavens To Betsy that obtain attention this year, it’s Sleater-Kinney. After 9 years, they come back with superb and brilliant album. Seems like in 9 years, they took the time to re-charge and finally bring us a magnificent album. In this album, they prove that they are still powerful and ready to show how women play rock shall be. Still concerning political issues as typical of riot grrrl movement, Corin Tucker and friends highlight working class issues in Price Tag, how the world see this problem in A New Wave and how the “labour” reacts to this case in Surface Envy.

9. Built To Spill – Untethered Moon

It’s been 6 years since the last album There Is No Enemy released in 2009, seems like Built To Spill devoted innumerable endeavor to embody their eighth album. This American band returns to their classic sound, as you listen to the entire tracks, you probably feel nostalgic to their past albums in 90’s. Time flies, they get older and somehow they just don’t know where to go or what to do in their age. Living Zoo and When I’m Blind reveal how directionless is their life, Never Be The Same is a lamentation from Doug Martsch and friends of being old.

8. Blur – The Magic Whip

90’s era is over and Blur no longer has a rival to prove that they are the greatest Britpop band. This is the most appealing album from Blur. The Magic Whip is unique and peculiar like hearing Everyday Robots and Gorillaz blended together. This comeback album after 12 years waiting successfully satisfies Blur’s massive fans expectation. Thought I Was A Spaceman is one of the essential tracks and reminds me of Bowie’s Space Oddity and Life On Mars. On the contrary, Go Out sounds like a typical Blur song. In addition, I personally rejoice to hear such as lovely-sunny love song from Blur in Ong Ong.

7. Laura Marling – Short Movie

Marling’s trademarks is her acoustic guitar but in her fifth album she embarks to play electric guitars as you can hear in False Hope and Gurdjieff’s Daughter. Being 25 yo in this year seems like she’s trying to address serious issue, for instance, feminism in Warrior. On the other hand, she is still looking for a lover to spend the rest of her life with in How Can I but it’s not Laura Marling without skeptical love song, being successful with New Romantic in 2007, I Feel Your Love pops up as Marling skeptical thought of love in this album.

6. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard - Paper Mache Dream Balloon

Listening to Paper Mache Dream Balloon is like you are in the village herding a cattle and listening to 60’s music. This splendid maneuver from King Gizzard brings you into more acoustic and harmonica tune, so, do not expect to hear a “psychedelic dark melody or electric instruments sounds” of them in this album (Well, Trapdoor and The Bitter Boogie may sound a little bit dark). So far, they turn into funky jazz in the first track Sense and folk-country in Bone and Dirt. All you can hear in this album is groovy-catchy melody with terrific lyrics from them.

5. Titus Andronicus - The Most Lamentable Tragedy

Have you ever thought about rock opera? When bands nowadays stuck with the conventional way to illustrate their musical skills in album, this punk rock band from New Jersey emerges with “epic-opera-rock-album”. 29 tracks in 93 minutes divided into 5 Acts with 4-8 songs in every acts. Patrick Stickless still keep the powerful and energetic sound of 70’s punk in this album and Dimed Out sounds like God Save The Queen + White Riot and yet obviously will be the anthem of today’s punk scene.

4. The Cribs – For All My Sisters

The latest album from jarman brothers is the poppiest album they’ve ever made since “Men’s Need, Women’s Need, Whatever” released in 2007. This album expresses the mature side of jarman with a lot of emotions and conveys personal (aftermath of Ryan-Kate Nash break up) life with sentimental lyrics (Burning For No One, Different Angle). If you are expecting the old cribs with their distinctive sound as garage rock band and a stomping vocal from Ryan as they did in their 2nd album (The New Fellas) and single of You’re Gonna Lose Us, you will not find those things in this album. However, so far I profess Pink Snow is the masterpiece song from all the songs they’ve ever composed and luckily exists in this album, the beautiful guitar playing and ryan’s voice resulting the greatest garage-rock-ballad song. Overall, this sixth album from them sounds catchy as hell as you listen to You Were Always The One (first album), I’m A Realist (third album) mix up with Chi-Town (fifth album).

3. Waxahatchee – Ivy Tripp

This third studio album by Katie Crutchfield under the name of “Waxahatchee” is arduous to explain what this album really means. Compared to the previous album “Cerulean Salt”, yes, it is popper and more mature. This time Katie has to encounter “quarter-life crisis” and convey it through the songs. This album reveals love, brokenhearted, curiosity, anger, disappointment and aimlessness with exquisite-complicated-sarcastic-detailed lyrics accompanied perfectly by mostly acoustic guitar sound except for Breathless,as the first and the only song full of keyboards playing and yet it’s fascinating to hear “The Vaselines” sounds in The Dirt.

2. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit

Don’t stop listening I’m not finished yet, I’m not fishing for your compliments, as the released of her debut album, Barnett obtained a lot of compliments and you won’t stop listening to this album as you get into, this Australian singer’s first album is genuinely idiosyncratic. Sounds like 90’s rock, clever lyrics about social life while most people never realize or even consider about it. Barnett tries to describe how depressing is Preston through Depreston or persuade us how to be “a good driver” since more people die on the road that they do in the ocean through Dead Fox.No wonder people concede that she is the female version of Kurt Cobain.

1. Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness

As the title of the album, Holter combines several sounds of nature and the exotic part of world to reflect the “wilderness” in this album. Sea Calls Me Home and Lucette Stranded On The Island are the strongest proofs. This fourth album from her, Holter attempts to convey her “personal feeling” through her opening song Feel You with the ethereal keyboards sound played by her and yielding a ballad-dreamy-catchy tune. Since she had released her debut album, people claimed that she had a typical-Kate Bush-sound and Everytime Boots is the evidence that this American singer-songwriter is the next generation of Kate Bush. After all, I shall say this is a pretentious and enticing album.
